Safety training is the unsung hero of many industries. It’s necessary for many reasons, but often unwanted by those who need it most. In the training world these courses are under the unfortunate category of compliance training. I say unfortunate because compliance training in general is often associated with long and boring classroom instruction. And in some cases it’s long and boring online self-paced instruction. But very few people frustrated with the design of these courses will tell you that safety isn’t an important concern. Consistent safety training for many employees can mean the difference between life and death.

21st Century Training Trends

Thankfully, new trends in training course design include shorter chunks of content with improved media quality even higher entertainment value, and delivered to mobile devices. These small content chunks, delivered over time, support the long term process of learning. Where one time events were once thought to be enough, we now know that classroom events are only the beginning of long term impactful learning that will be applied on the job. And to be clear, I didn’t say that classroom events should disappear. Instead, they play an important role in newer blended learning design models. 21st century training course design is all about blending together the best of all modes of instruction into a solution that supports the application of knowledge on the job. And in the case of safety training could save someone’s life.

Safety Training Case Study

Keeping employees safe is a concern for every business, but for some companies it’s a matter of life and death on a daily basis. The work being done by compliance and safety training professionals should be applauded. I believe far to often we forget about the importance of safety until tragedy strikes. And as a training professional it stings a little more when follow up reviews reveal human error due to lack of training as the cause.  Training is certainly not a magic wand that will prevent all accidents, but I do feel better when I read about companies taking an active role in delivering effective safety training with the Litmos learning management system.
