Brent Schlenker Interviews US Department of Ed Director of EdTech

Richard Culatta

Richard Culatta, Director of Educational Technology, U.S. Department of Education

I had the pleasure of talking to one of my favorite people in EdTech recently. Richard Culatta is the Director of Educational Technology for the U.S. Department of Education, and without question one of the most positive people I know.  When I first met Richard he was working as the Director of Training for the Central Intelligence Agency. And I’m pretty sure that I booked him as a speaker at every DevLearn I produced for The eLearning Guild…at least at the ones he could attend.

I have 3 kids and must confess that I have not been a big fan of the education system in the U.S. However I try to keep an open mind about everything and look for opportunities to learn from those with first hand knowledge. I learned a long time ago, while working in a news room, that what makes it to the public is only a fraction of the real story. So, I knew I was going to learn something from Richard, but didn’t know what. I was happily surprised.

His enthusiasm for education and educational technology is contagious. We covered several interesting topics and he shocked me with a statistic that blew my mind.  He also announces a new EdTech Developers Guide published by the Department of Education. You can check it out at Tech.ed.gov.

I think there is a little something for everyone in this video. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed chatting with Richard.
