Find out more about what is learning system design.
What is learning system design? This is a common question that many training departments have to explore when they are looking at software options for managing their eLearning content. Learning management systems (LMS) are available in options where companies design and program their own system, and also in options where none of those steps are required. There are a number of factors that will help determine which of those options are best for you.
Types of LMS software
The two types of LMS software that you can use are open source or vendor supported. Regardless of which options you choose, your learning system design will must be one that works well for your needs.
An open source LMS is one where you purchase a software license with open programming. Your company's technical staff will then work with your training department to design an LMS that will work for your organization. If that sounds like a lot of work, that's because it is! In many situations, it can take an extensive amount of time to get this LMS up and running. Then, there is ongoing support and maintenance that must be managed in-house.
The other option is to purchase a subscription for a vendor supported LMS. Here, your company doesn't have to do the design and programming. You can simply personalize some basic features of the LMS, load your users and training data, then start using the LMS. Some may question the feasibility of using an off-the-shelf product of this type, but the design can be very solid. Typically, this choice is a good one because the company has developed the software after extensive experience with companies of all sizes. Technical support is included with the subscription to the LMS, so the staffing needed to manage the it is significantly less.
