Who is USA Volleyball?
USA Volleyball is the national governing body for the sport of volleyball in the United States. Its membership includes coaches, players, officials, club directors, independent contractors, employees, and regional partners who collectively grow and support the sport at every level.
Driven by a commitment to delivering a uniform, high-quality member experience, USA Volleyball focuses on compliance, performance excellence, and operational consistency. From enforcing codes of conduct to advancing athlete and coach development, the organization’s mission centers on strengthening the volleyball community nationwide.
With USA Volleyball’s membership base serving more than 300,000 members annually across all 50 states, and continuing to grow, the organization required a reliable, scalable training partner, capable of delivering consistent education across a highly distributed network. To ensure performance, integration, and a seamless user experience at national scale, the organization turned to Litmos to enhance and centralize its training ecosystem.
Why USA Volleyball Chose Litmos to Power Nationwide Training
As participation in club volleyball surged, USA Volleyball faced a significant challenge: traditional instructor-led training was no longer scalable.
“Prior to implementing an LMS, increased participation in club volleyball made instructor-led training impractical. Early attempts with other LMS platforms also fell short due to performance and reliability issues,” shares Matt Podschweit Instructional Systems Designer for USA Volleyball.
With hundreds of thousands of learners accessing training annually, system stability and seamless integration were critical. USA Volleyball selected Litmos to deliver a centralized, reliable, and automated solution capable of supporting nationwide growth. “Our previous LMS solutions offered few features and infrastructure that could not handle our peak load and traffic. With Litmos, we are still discovering useful features and performance through our busiest season has been flawless,” explains Podschweit.
“The implementation process took five months, and the onboarding experience was smooth, everythingworked as expected. Customer service was responsive and helpful throughout,” says Podschweit. Working closely with a Litmos mentor and the customer experience team, USA Volleyball launched a system that has since become foundational to its training operations.

Driving Engagement, Compliance, and Cost Efficiency at National Scale
Today, USA Volleyball trains more than 300,000 learners annually, supported by 10 System Administrators and 120 Team Administrators, serving members across all 50 states. Training includes officiating, coaching, and player education, with content authored in Articulate and delivered through Litmos to ensure consistent access and tracking. Podschweit describes Litmos as “easy to use for both administrators and learners, a critical factor when serving hundreds of thousands of users each year, all of whom are at different skill levels.”

Integrating Litmos with Membership Management Systems
A major differentiator for USA Volleyball is its deep integration with its Membership Management System (MMS), SportsEngine. Through Litmos API connections and webhooks, learners are automatically onboarded from the MMS, and course completions report back in real time.
“Most onboarding comes directly from our membership management system, and most course completions report back to the MMS,” explains Podschweit. “This synchronization keeps membership data, event systems, and training records aligned, eliminating manual processes and reinforcing both compliance and operational efficiency. All learners access Litmos via Single Sign-On from the MMS, creating a seamless experience within our existing member ecosystem.”
The organization relies heavily on API and webhooks, Litmos Assign, custom user and course fields, instructor-led training functionality, and learner uploads. Together, these capabilities provide the automation, flexibility, and reliability required to deliver consistent, compliant, and scalable training nationwide. “Using Litmos Assign, we are able to distribute officiating training to more than 200 different teams, ensuring the right learners receive the right training at the right time,” continued Podschweit.

ROI of Training with Litmos
Since implementing Litmos, USA Volleyball has experienced measurable growth in participation and engagement. “Between September 1, 2024 and April 28, 2025, we recorded more than 258,000 unique logins and over 550,000 course completions. We’ve noticed more and earlier participation in our seasonal training,” Podschweit reported, noting that participation increases are used as a proxy formembership growth, a key KPI.
Compliance remains a cornerstone of USA Volleyball’s training strategy, accounting for the majority of its more than 660,000 course completions. Officiating education is required, with regions enforcing their own mandates. Litmos supports code of conduct compliance, standardized officiating requirements, uniform training experiences across all regions, and consistent data integration between systems. The result is improved oversight and accountability across a complex, distributed organization. Financially, the shift to centralized online training has driven significant efficiency. Prior to virtual training, each region was responsible for training its members independently. Today, USA Volleyball delivers nationwide training at an approximate cost of just $0.18 per user, per year. “Currently, our training costs are approximately $.18 per user, per year. With revenue covering system costs, Litmos has proven to be a highly cost-effective solution that scales alongside membership growth,” explains Podschweit.
USA Volleyball measures ROI through revenue covering costs, feedback from regional partners, user experience surveys, and analyzing help desk activity to monitor trends and common issues. “Where we have seen the most dramatic improvement is in system usability reliability,” states Podschweit.
At scale, Litmos has enabled USA Volleyball to transform what was once a fragmented, regionally managed process into a unified, strategic training ecosystem, driving participation, ensuring compliance, and delivering measurable value across more than 300,000 members nationwide.

What’s Next for USA Volleyball
As USA Volleyball continues to grow, the organization is focused on evolving its training strategy to support new opportunities and expanding needs. Currently undergoing a training reorganization, the team is exploring the addition of new departments and audiences to further extend the reach and impact of its learning programs. At the same time, USA Volleyball is investing in the development of its own Membership Management System, with a fully integrated Litmos connection planned by September 1, 2026. This next phase will further streamline operations, strengthen system alignment, and enhance the overall member experience. With a strong foundation already in place, USA Volleyball is well-positioned to continue scaling a modern, connected training ecosystem that grows alongside the sport.
