You will need to create a certificate template in the required format and file type for Litmos before you can upload it to a Course or Learning Path. If you upload a certificate template to your Course or Learning Path, Learners will be able to download their own personalized completion certificate as a PDF file upon completion of the Course or Learning Path.

Supported Certificate Template File Types
Generally, certificate templates should be created using Microsoft Word or a similar program and uploaded into the Course settings. You can upload your certificate template as a .doc, .docx, or .rtf file.
Supported Certificate Template Placeholder Fields
Your certificate template can contain a selection of placeholders which will be replaced with the relevant values when the certificate is downloaded.

- Module place holders will be replaced with values only if they are included in table.
- For [MODULE_GAMIFICATION_POINTS] to be added to the certificate, there has to be gamification item with ‘Select Trigger Event = Module Completion’.
- Preview will not show module details if the user previewing has not completed the course.
- Course placeholders and module placeholders does not apply for Learning Path certificate. So, if Admin uses course placeholders and module placeholders on Learning Path certificate – End user will see the actual placeholders with no values.
Note: You can make the placeholder fields any text size, font, and color you like in the certificate, but they must be entered exactly the same as above. i.e. Capitalized and with square brackets on either end.
The Administrators can select predefined custom date format placeholders to display different date string values on a certificate to override the default User Profile date format.
Supported Certificate Template Fonts
The certificate supports most default Microsoft Office fonts, but some custom fonts will be matched as closely as possible.
Note: The Learner Custom field placeholders pull from the corresponding Legacy Custom fields found in Account settings > Messages & Settings > Custom Fields.
This list encompasses the supported fonts for certificates, if you choose to use a font outside of this list it will revert to the closest font in this list.

Upload a Certificate Template to a Course or Learning Path
- From Admin view, navigate to the Course or Learning Path you wish to add a certificate template to
- Click on the Settings tab
- Scroll down to the “Certificate Template” section and upload your certificate template file
- Once the certificate template file is uploaded, test it by clicking the “Show me a preview” link to make sure it is generating properly
