Create Brands and add Learners to those brands to control the UI theme for various groups of users. Each user can be associated to one Brand. The Brand can be updated in the UI on the user profile, the bulk import, the team bulk actions, Litmos Assign Engine and by use of the appropriate API requests.
What is a Brand?
A Brand is a way to control what a Learner can see based on what Brand they are in. Learners set to a Brand will have the follow items designated for that brand:
Email Templates (see the “Customizable Email Templates & Mobile Text (SMS) Notifications” section for the Account Settings help articles for more information)
Logo, Learner Homepage HTML Banner, Learner and Admin Pages Color Scheme, Course Player Color Scheme, Custom header, Custom footer, Custom CSS, Custom JavaScript
What is the difference between Teams and Brands?
Although the basic concept to categorize Users with Brands and Teams are very similar, the purpose of these two features is very different.
Brands |
Teams |
|
Relationship to Users |
One to one |
One to Many |
Assign Courses and Learning Paths |
Does not control what Courses and Learning Paths a Learner can see. |
Assigns Courses and Learning Paths directly to users and makes them available through the Course Library. |
Controls look of the Platform |
A user’s Brand determines what UI theme they will see. |
Teams have no control over what the platform looks like to a user. |
Control Emails Sent |
A user’s Brand determines what emails they will receive. |
Teams have no control over what emails a user receives. |
Access Roles and Leaders |
There are no Leaders or Access Roles controlled by Brands. |
Team Leaders and Team Admins have the ability to run reports and do basic administrative actions for their Team depending on permissions given to these roles. |
How do I create and edit a Brand?
All accounts will contain a Default Brand that cannot be edited or deleted from the Brands feature page. This Brand will inherit all properties set in the Account Theme and Account Email settings for the organization. The Default Brand can only be viewed from the Brands feature page.
In order to edit this Default Brand, an Account Owner would need to edit the Account Theme and Account Email settings.
To create a new Brand:
-
As an Account Owner, navigate to Account Settings > Litmos Features > Brands
-
Select “Add Brand”
-
Give the Brand a name. By default, the brand will include all attributes from the Default Brand.
-
Select the Logo and emails that people in that Brand will see.
-
Click “Save”
Once the new Brand has been saved, the Brand theme settings can be edited, and people can be assigned to the Brand.
If you need to duplicate all of the attributes from one custom Brand to another, use the “Copy” option next to the Brand to be copied.
Note: Brands are not available for all accounts. Please contact your Account Manager for more information.
How do I add users to a Brand?
-
Individually – Admins can view and change a Brand for a user from within a user’s profile. Change a user’s Brand by Selecting “Edit {first name}” from the user’s profile, change the Brand, click “Save”.
-
By Team – All users in a Team can have a one-time push from within the Team. This can be accomplished by clicking the “Push all users under this team into a Brand”, select the Brand, and click “Submit”.
Note: Assigning users to a Brand from a Team is a one-time push and will not affect users who are later added to the Team.
Note: All users belonging to the team and related sub-teams will be added into the Brand.
-
Bulk Import – The Bulk Import code can be retrieved from Accounts > Brands and then added to the bulk import CSV in the People tab. This allows administrators to assign users to Brands via the bulk import by including the brand import code in the import file for each user that requires a Brand. The bulk import feature can also be used to update the Brand of existing users. View the “Import People in Bulk” section for the People help articles for more.
-
Litmos Assign Engine – The Litmos Assign engine lets Account Owners create rules which can automatically add users to Brands.
-
Brands Feature – As an Account Owner, users can be added to a Brand by navigating to Accounts > Brands > select Edit Brand icon> Add Users to the Brand.
Note: Brands have a one-to-one relationship. If a user is placed into a Brand they will be removed from the Brand they were previously in.
How can I See the Users that belong to a Brand?
-
User Profile – Users will have the Brand they belong to at the bottom of the right-hand column in their User Profile.
-
Brands Feature – As an Account Owner, all users in a Brand can be viewed by navigating to Accounts > Brands. Select the “View Users” button to see the list of all users assigned to that Brand.
-
Reporting – A number of reports allow a Brand column to be added or to filter by a Brand:

How do Brands Work with Language?
If a User has a language that is not English, it is recommended that the email templates used for that Brand include edits to the template for those Languages as well. If no edits have been made to the email template for that language, they will receive the English template for that Brand.
It is also feasible to use the Brand feature for localization purposes. Customize the email templates and the UI theme for each Brand in order to translate the UI theme elements (header, footer, html, etc.) to a specific language and add people into those brands who have matching languages preferences as set on their user profiles. Litmos Assign can be used to help automate this behavior.
