Founded in 1961, Air General is a family-owned, U.S.-based airline and ocean cargo/freight handling and warehousing company headquartered in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Modernizing Airline Training: Choosing an LMS in a Highly Regulated Industry

As a company operating in a highly regulated industry, Air General needed a learning management system that could handle the complexity and volume of training required to maintain compliance at every level. Before adopting Litmos, training relied heavily on in-person instruction, which was costly, time-consuming, and difficult to coordinate across more than 30 sites nationwide. The leadership team knew they needed a solution that could centralize training, reduce costs, and make learning more accessible for employees working in different states and roles.

Air General chose Litmos because it offered the flexibility to customize and add internal courses, while also providing a strong content library of ready-made training programs. The mobile-first design and internet-based access meant employees could complete the required training anytime, anywhere, helping to improve both engagement and completion rates. Price and scalability were also major factors, as Litmos provided a cost-effective solution that could grow alongside Air General’s workforce and evolving training needs.

As Timothy Cotter, Manager of Training and Leadership Development, recalls, “When I took over the program in 2015 there were just 11 employees registered in Litmos and only two courses available. Since then, the platform has expanded to support more than 700 employees and 24 administrators, becoming the backbone of Air General’s training strategy.”

Expanding and Strengthening Compliance, Skill Building, and Leadership Training

Air General’s training program plays a critical role in meeting strict government, state, and industry requirements. With more than 700 employees spread across multiple sites, ensuring consistent, accessible, and compliant training was a challenge before adopting Litmos. The company needed a solution that could deliver regulatory, safety, security, and human resources training, while also providing mobile and internet-based access, customization options for Air General’s own courses, and a robust content library.

Litmos proved to be the answer. Since implementing the system, Air General has transformed its training approach from costly, in-person sessions to a cost-effective, streamlined digital model. Compliance is now easily tracked and maintained, particularly for TSA-mandated training, and leaders can monitor progress through reporting and learning paths. According to Cotter, “Prior to Litmos, we utilized in-person training, and that was very costly and difficult to coordinate. Since Litmos, our costs have greatly reduced as in person instruction is being replaced with new courses which serve to cover all requirements.”

Cotter continues,

“The results [since implementing Litmos] have been substantial. Compliance and risk management have reached new levels. Compliance with federal agencies is not optional, and Litmos enables us to deliver and track course materials that meet federal, state, and local requirements, ensuring transparency and accountability across all levels. The reporting system allows local leaders to easily demonstrate required training during audits or inquiries from regulatory agencies, while the ability to add certificates ensures all documentation remains accessible and verifiable. Air General achieves a high rate of training completions through Litmos’ real-time reporting, which provides Team Leads, Admins, and senior leadership with up-to-date visibility into training progress. This accessibility and oversight keep our teams aligned and consistently moving toward our 100% compliance goal.”

 

Training costs have dropped significantly as in-person instruction has been replaced with targeted digital programs and new courses. Engagement has also improved, with employees taking advantage of the mobile app to complete training on the go, while managers and leaders rely on detailed reporting to drive course completions. Air General has also scaled dramatically, growing from just 11 registered employees in 2015 to more than 700 today, supported by 24 administrators across 37 locations,” continues Cotter.

In addition to the LMS, Air General also utilizes the Litmos Content library for prebuilt, off-the-shelf courses. As Cotter explains:

“The Litmos Course library is a valuable tool which supports and assists with training all employees at many levels. Our employees gain the ability to access self-taught training to advance their personal skills. Our leadership program provides them with courses they otherwise wouldn’t have access to, to develop skills and abilities to advance in their careers. The course library overall saves time and money for our company as many courses are relevant, complete, easy to follow training that employees and leaders enjoy.”

What’s Next for Air General? Customer Service Training and AI Training Management with Litmos

Looking ahead, Air General plans to expand its training strategy beyond regulatory requirements to focus more deeply on leadership and employee development. The company is developing shorter, more engaging courses designed to improve knowledge retention and support career advancement.

Air General is also in the early stages of building a customer service training program, combining in-house content with selected courses from the Litmos library to strengthen service initiatives. With compliance training well-established, this expansion represents a natural progression toward broader organizational growth and development.

The company is also optimistic about the continued evolution of Litmos, particularly in the area of AI, which it has already begun using as a course search tool. With further advancements, Air General expects Litmos to play an even greater role in enhancing efficiency and supporting administrative needs.
