It’s Spooky Season: Watch Out for These Learning Monsters
Updated on October 31, 2025
What’s that noise? Don’t open that door! There could be a learning monster on the other side! It’s Spooky Season, and that means monsters are everywhere, even in your Learning & Development (L&D) program. But don’t hide under the bed. Litmos is calling upon you to do battle with the terrifying creatures who haunt your enterprise learning.
A Bestiary of New Training Terrors
What monsters lurk in your organization and are you ready to face the following foes?
The Learning Zombie
The Learning Zombie is every L&D pro’s worst nightmare. You’ll know you have a Learning Zombie in your midst when you see signs of brain rot, which may include a lack of enthusiasm for self-guided learning, zero interest in upskilling, and a general decrease in curiosity. The good news is that there are simple steps you can take to re-animate a Learning Zombie: start by offering bite-sized microlearning modules to feed their hungry braaaaaains, and encourage bloodied hands-on learning with new, engaging content that includes opportunities for on-the-job application.
The Content Mummy
Is your compliance and onboarding content downright ancient? If so, you face the terrifying Content Mummy, a bone-chilling sight to every L&D professional. You can scream but don’t run! Instead, dust off those mummified courses and infuse them with fresh information. Non-compliance is a real risk for the Content Mummy, so be sure that your LMS learning library offers localized, regularly updated courses on the latest laws and regulations.
The Wherewolf
The WHEREwolf doesn’t come out with the full moon. It takes form when learners struggle to find their courses and content within the LMS. Tame this angry beast by streamlining confusing, hard-to-navigate user experiences and enabling the Litmos AI Assistant to help learners discover, summarize, and recall their courses within the LMS.
The Phantom of AI Literacy
Beware the ghost that haunts the halls of learning, the Phantom of AI Literacy. This spectral menace feeds on the confusion and fear of those who struggle to grasp the ever-evolving world of artificial intelligence. It delights in turning straightforward concepts into incomprehensible jargon, leaving learners lost in a labyrinth of algorithms and neural networks. The Phantom of AI Literacy can only be vanquished when every learner feels empowered to navigate the world of artificial intelligence with confidence.
The Wicked Witch of the Test
She instills fear in even the most experienced L&D professional. She’ll swoop into your mind and trick you into ignoring proven methodologies and creating ineffective tests and quizzes. Once she casts her spell, you’ll be crafting silly multiple-choice responses that don’t measure or improve retention. The best way to defeat The Wicked Witch of the Test is to implement assessment best practices that help you measure whether learners have truly learned new skills that can be applied in the workplace.
The Culture Vampire
This ghoul can suck the energy out of any learning culture. More horrifying, they’re often managers or executives who aren’t on board with the training program and undermine its success by downplaying the value of learning to their teams and other leaders. Yikes! They must be stopped before all your noble efforts are thwarted. Become the Van Helsing of learning by winning them over with clear communications on what they care about like measurable outcomes and performance improvements.
